One Thing Led to Another (43 x 43 cm)
Earth pigments on linen with hand stitch.
How it all started
I was scheduled to steward at an exhibition and to make the quiet moments feel productive and to hopefully spark a few conversations with visitors, I decided to take some earth pigmented cloth to stitch.
It seemed obvious that I should keep my favourite pieces until I had a plan, so this less precious piece seemed like the perfect companion for the gallery.
But something unexpected happened. As I stitched, I started to really appreciate its quiet marks and texture and the stitched shapes brought a new rhythm to the surface. Yet something still felt missing; it needed more depth, more life. Back home, I paused the stitching and layered more earth pigments over parts of the cloth and then with a new sense of direction, I began to stitch again responding to the evolving surface.
